Flight School Features

Certificates and Ratings Offered:

These are the different certificates and ratings that be obtained at this flight school.
Certificates and Ratings Offered:

Part 141 Training

Does this school offer Part 141 training? Part 141 is a section of the Federal Aviation Regulations that provide additional oversight by the FAA. Typically Part 141 schools are more structured, more professional, and provide additional services that a Part 61 flight school may not. Because of this, the FAA allows pilots to obtain their certificates/ratings with lower hourly requirements. However, a part 141 program does require stage checks. This type of learning environment is better for some, but is not necessarily right for everyone.
Part 141 Training:
No

Private - Part 61

Does this school offer Private Pilot training under FAR Part 61. Part 61 training is the section of the Federal Aviation Regulations that details the training requirements to obtain a pilot certificate or rating. Part 61 schools may be large professional institutions, or they may be a single instructor operating on their own. It is important that a prospective student look into how a part 61 flight school operates.
Private - Part 61:
Yes

Instrument Rating

Does this school offer training for your Instrument Rating? If you want to legally fly in the clouds, certain airspace, and avoid travel delays, you'll need an Instrument Rating. An Instrument Rating allows a pilot to fly in Instrument Meteorological Conditions. IMC definitions vary based on airspace, but typically are defined as visibility less than 3 statue miles and a cloud ceiling of less than 1000ft.

An Airline Transport Pilot Certificate replaces your Commercial Certificate and allows you to act as Pilot in Command on a part 121 (scheduled air carrier) or part 135 (on-demand charter) operation. This certificate is available for both single and multi-engine aircraft. On January 1st 2013, all airline pilots will be required to possess this certificate.

However, you are limited to Light-Sport aircraft that can not exceed 120 knots, may not carry more than 1 passenger, must be single engine, and may not have a retractable landing gear. Other limitations apply. Please refer to the Federal Aviation Regulations.
Sport Pilot:
No

Recreational Pilot

The recreational pilot certificate requires less training and offers fewer privileges than the private certificate. It was originally created for flying small single-engine planes, and has since been largely supplanted by the Sport Pilot certificate. It is significantly more restrictive than a private pilot certificate. The holder is restricted to 50 nautical miles from his/her field of departure and from operating in the vicinity of airports with a control tower, though these restrictions can be lifted with additional training and endorsements.

Cons

Price (in comparison to other schools)

My Review of East Coast Aero Club - Bedford:
I started my PPL training at another school and moved on after I lost confidence in my instructor. I was a little put off by East Coast's pricing, but they are truly worth every penny. My instructor is exceptional, the planes are very clean and well maintained, and I feel like a welcomed part of the family every time I walk in the door. Even the owner has taken the time to walk out with me to the plane and chat with me. I have also been impressed by the office staff, who all seem to be very knowledgeable. Admittedly, I'm a fairly difficult to please non-people person person, but I can only offer the highest of praises for the people I have met here and especially of my instructor - Jim Henry. His schedule is a bit limited, but if you are able to train during daytime hours, I definitely recommend syncing up with him.

Pros

Online Scheduling
Clean and Well Maintained Aircraft
Knowledgeable Flight Instructors and Staff
Simple Checkout and Rental Procedures
Have Their Own Maintenance on the Field

Cons

Office is Fairly Small
Fueling Sometimes Takes Time
Very Lengthy Take Home Worksheets

My Review of East Coast Aero Club - Bedford:
I called East Coast Aero club looking to rent their C-182T G1000 aircraft for a weekend trip. I had never flown with this flight school before, but saw that they had the aircraft I was interested in renting available. I called and made an appointment to receive a checkout and was able to schedule the checkout on a day and time of my choosing. The checkout was thorough, but nothing that a qualified pilot would have trouble with. I was able to complete my checkout in a single 2 hour block (1.5 hobbs) and was sent home with an extensive home work sheet to be filled out prior to actually renting.

I was very pleased with the appearance and quality of the aircraft that I rented. All systems worked perfectly and I had no issues of any kind during my trip.

I was also able to set up the ability to schedule the aircraft online the same day as my checkout.

I would not hesitate to rent from East Coast Aero Club again!

Pros

East Coast Aero Club has the best aircraft maintenance, they fly the best aircraft. Brigitte (multi-engine instructor) is an exceptional instructor!

Cons

My Review of East Coast Aero Club - Bedford:
Their maintenance is always on top of their repairs. They also have a simulator (FTD) that you can use to log hours.

This is a Part 61 school. Most of their instructors have thousands of hours. You usually start and end with the same instructor because most of them work at the school as their career. You usually wont find brand new CFIs who are looking to hop into the airlines within a few months of your training. East Coast Aero Club provides solid and consistent training.

Their multi-engine program is the finest. They fly 2 Piper Seminoles. When one is in maintenance, they will make arrangements to fly in their back up if its available! Not many school have 2 multis, its very convenient. I've flown at a handful of school, this is a great one, highly recommended.
