My Review of Jerry Trimble Heliopters:
I had a really good experience. I landed in Seattle Washington at 11:30am, called down to Jerry Trimble Helicopters and asked if I could drive down and meet them. I was asked if I wanted to fly. Of course I said “yes”, that is the only thing a true pilot ever says when asked if he wants to fly. So I drove for four hours to McMinnville, Oregon. When I got there, the airport had that great small town feel. As you walk through the open gate, you get that feeling that someone is going to yell at you. Then you realize, not only is no one going to yell, but everyone you talk to is so overly friendly that you feel like you just came home after a deployment. As I walked through the office door, I was met by Jerry sitting on a couch. We sat around and talked for about 30 minutes. If you ever get to fly with Jerry, ask him to tell you about his father’s flying in Papua New Guinea. So I did a preflight, rolled out the helicopter and off we went. I could spend the next hour telling you about my hour flight; but I will spear you and just say it was a really good time and Jerry really helped improve my full downs. I was just going for a fun flight and ended up learning more in a single hour with Jerry than I ever have before. After the flight I sat around and talked to Jerry and his wife for almost an hour.
As I did the four hour drive back to Seattle, thoughts started rolling through my head. Maybe this is what is missing in my life. To find a place that you can slow down and enjoy life, while doing what you love. Anyone that has been to a big flight school knows, it’s all about the production line. You are lucky if they even know your name. I never imagined one flight, at a little flight school in the little town of McMinnville, Oregon, could change my whole outlook on life. I went down to meet Jerry on someone’s advice from the Heli EXPO. I am not even sure who told me to go, but it was the best advice I have received in many years. I am a really fast paced, hard pushing kind of guy. This experience should me that sometimes life is about slowing down and having fun. To whomever gave me the advice, I say thank you, and to whoever reads this, I say go see for yourself.
So if you took the time to figure out my timeline, I flew into Seattle Thursday at 11:30 am, drove 4 hours to McMinnville, Oregon, flew, chatted, drove 4 hours back to Seattle. I got to my hotel a little after midnight and still got up for work the next day at 5am. It is not really like me to be so spontaneous any more, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Pros
High experienced instructor, less cost than surrounding schools, adaptability to individual needs without the idea of just making money and pumping out another CFI or pilot, no waiting to get off the ground because of lack of tower, and the availability and scheduling couldn't be easier. Honestly, probably one of the best schools in the PacNW. There's a great FBO, lots of great people around, lots knowledge and a willingness to share it. |
Cons
45 minutes from Portland, if that is really considered a con. |
My Review of Jerry Trimble Heliopters:
As far as I am concerned, Jerry Trimble Helicopters is one of the better options for a flight school in and around the Portland, Oregon area. His staff, his aircraft, and their mom and pop feel of an operation can't be beat. Scheduling aircraft and availability were never ever a problem. There is almost no wait to get into the air, albeit there is a lot of traffic in the area. I felt like I learned more during a couple months with Trimble Helicopters than with my prior school that I felt was just another pilot factory. This operation is truly a one on one experience with plenty of CFI's, mechanics, and other pilots in and around the hangar and FBO, it's an experience that is hard to find these days.
