My Review of Texas State Aviation:
- Total rip off: Instructor is motivated to rip you off by slowing the progress. He is paid by the hour after all. So far had 7 lessons - of which 3 was total waste.
- No procedures: instructor does not provide clear and concise maneuvers' procedures. So I downloaded the procedures from the internet to practice on my home-simulator and was told off for getting into slow flight at 1500RPM (as the procedures I downloaded defines) rather than at 1800RPM as the instructor asks. Both numbers are within POH range - but no explanation why I should get into slow flight at 1800 RPM rather than at 1500RPM. I still do not know why he wants higher power setting but not 1500RPM. He says "just do as I demonstrate - haahhhh"???... But why????...
- No ground briefings prior to flights: Would expect the instructor should explain before each flight the maneuvers to-be practiced on the board in a classroom, what the target alt/heading limits should be at what power/pitch setting. Rather the instructor uses the plane in the air as a class room and tells you to do things on the go.
- No post-flight review: After each flight I would like to know how my performance was. Rather brief "that was OK" type of feedback provided but not the techniques to overcome the issues - i.e: if I am losing altitude during steep turns, I would expect that the instructor should tell me to put the power up and trim for 2-3 rounds of pitch-up attitude... I find all these instructions on the internet - so why do I pay for instructor time???....
- Environment is totally unhealthy: School is run at a very old building - not cleaned regularly. The toilets are revolting, break-room/kitchen areas are extremely dirty. Don't want to even fill my bottle from the water-cooler. As soon as my flight is over want to get out of the building and head back home.
- Cancellation: After my 7th lesson I cancelled my training with Texas State Aviation- now trying to recover the fees I paid upfront. Lets see if there is any bit of professionalism in the refund process...
- Signed up with Redbird Skyport Flight School, next door - Excellent. Very professional approach - new and well maintained building, newer planes, Redbird motion simulators, fixed-price/fixed-time curriculum to get it all done in appx. a month...
- Texas State Aviation thumbs down...
